
The contractor, Skanska Grundläggning, started to reinforce the area using concrete piles, but soon met with geotechnical problems. The area had a clay layer more than 50 metres thick, which constituted a danger of collapse. Because of this challenge, it was decided to replace half of the concrete piles with Ruukki's steel piles.
The piles had to be installed according to a very detailed schedule, which required particular accuracy in logistics, as no storage facilities for the piles were available at the harbour.
