CHALLENGE
International sea traffic, container traffic in particular, is continuously increasing, as is the size of ocean-going vessels. Skandiahamnen harbour in Gothenburg is the largest ocean harbour in the Nordic countries, and its operational volume is still growing quickly.

The contractor, Skanska Grundläggning, started to reinforce the area using concrete piles, but soon met with geotechnical problems. The area had a clay layer more than 50 metres thick, which constituted a danger of collapse. Because of this challenge, it was decided to replace half of the concrete piles with Ruukki's steel piles.

The piles had to be installed according to a very detailed schedule, which required particular accuracy in logistics, as no storage facilities for the piles were available at the harbour.
